Alen Ožbolt: Ceci n’est pas une photographie
Spaces of Photography / On, Above, Below, Over Photography
8 September – 9 October 2015
The exhibition entitled Ceci n’est pas une photographie. and subtitled Spaces of Photography / On, Above, Below, Over Photography by Slovenian artist Alen Ožbolt will put on show a number of his mixed-media works that relate to the photographic medium on several different levels. Moreover, it will explore the ways in which photography penetrates his works, which is mostly painting, sculpture, performance and installation art. The show will present pieces from 1984-1995, the period when Ožbolt was a member of the artist group VSSD (Do You Painter Know Your Dues), as well as the period after 1996 when he started working independently all the way to his recent projects from 2009-2014.
Ožbolt’s visual expression has its starting point in “spatial painting”, whereby he focuses on rendering three-dimensionality and the ambience of painting, introducing spatial and temporal categories to the perception of the viewer. Although the artist has never used photography as his primary creative medium, it has always played an important role in his artistic work in other media, as this exhibition will show.
Alen Ožbolt (1966) is a visual artist who works across various media, using a multiplicity of techniques. He graduated from both the Fine Art Academies in Zagreb and in Ljubljana, and was a visiting artist at the San Francisco Art Institute (SFAI). He was part of the group Do You Painter Know Your Dues (VSSD) from 1984-1995 and has been working independently since 1996. Since 2007 he has been a professor of Sculpture at the Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Ljubljana, where he lives and works.
