Peter Fettich: Crushed Berries & Matej Sitar: Once Upon a Time, Somewhere

In this artist’s dialogue, a known and an unknown author meet. One of the protagonists is a box that Matej Sitar discovered at a flea market in the USA in 2006. A box containing old Polaroids, scattered negatives, and a handwritten diary. No name, no date, no information about the author – just fragments of life captured in images and words. The photographs from the series Once Upon a Time, Somewhere (date unknown) offer glimpses from different parts of America – motels, roads, strangers, interiors, shadows, and intimate notes. The story of the unknown chronicler is counterpointed by Peter Fettich’s series Crushed Berries (2025), in which he presents a record of his personal story during treatment for tongue cancer. Through his own archival and newly created material, and subsequent (experimental) work in the darkroom, the author presents his immediate, documentary response to treatment, as well as later psychological responses to the themes of transience and resilience of the human body. Two photographers meet, each having recorded personal reality in their own way, questioning the connection between human transience and the desire to leave a legacy of personal experience of the world.
