Residency – Ptuj
Photon Residency is an international artist residency in photography and visual arts located in the historic centre of Ptuj, the oldest town in Slovenia. The programme offers artists a calm working environment and dedicated studio space for artistic research, experimentation and the development of new artistic projects.
The residency provides accommodation and studio facilities within the same property, enabling residents to combine concentrated artistic work with everyday exchange and collaboration.
Participants receive professional support through mentorship, studio visits and discussions with curators, artists and photography professionals connected to Photon’s international network.
One of the key advantages of the residency is its close connection to Photon Gallery in Ljubljana, one of the leading platforms for contemporary photography in Slovenia and the wider Central and Eastern European region. During their stay, residents can visit exhibitions, participate in discussions and engage with the gallery’s curatorial programme. The programme is also connected to P shop in Maribor, a space dedicated to photography books, exhibitions and public events that fosters dialogue within the local photography community.
Through long-term collaborations with cultural institutions and partners in Slovenia, Austria, Hungary and Croatia, Photon Residency provides opportunities for international networking, professional exchange and increased visibility for artists working in photography and visual culture. The residency aims to support artistic mobility, encourage dialogue between artists and curators, and strengthen contemporary photography in the region.
Facilities
The residency provides accommodation and studio space within the same property, enabling artists to work in a focused and flexible environment. Residents have access to private rooms, shared living areas, a fully equipped kitchen, bathroom facilities, internet access and a studio with natural light suitable for photographic work and small-scale production.

The Photon Residency is located in an exceptional location on the castle hill in Ptuj, the oldest town in Slovenia, known for its well-preserved medieval architecture and vibrant cultural heritage. Situated near the Austrian and Hungarian borders, Ptuj offers a unique environment where artists can work in a calm local setting while remaining connected to the cultural scenes of Ljubljana, Graz, Zagreb and Budapest.
Who can apply
Photon Residency is open to artists and cultural professionals working in photography and related visual practices. The programme primarily supports emerging and mid-career artists, with a particular focus on artists from Central and Eastern Europe, while remaining open to international applicants.
