Vladimír Židlický (1945, Czech Republic) is a world renowned photographer and artist. His work is highly valued by collectors and professional photographers. Since 1980 he has been represented in many solo and group exhibitions in many various institutions and private galleries in Europe and the USA. His works are in many private and public collections, among them Centre Pompidou, Bibliotheque Nationale, Maison Europeenne de la Photographie (all in Paris), Chalon-sur-Saone, Museum Ludwig, Köln am Rhein, Photography Museum of Charleroi, Museum of Fine Arts Houston, Museum of Modern Art New York, Museum of Modern Art San Francisco and many others.
The selection under the title Artful Games covers the last ten years of Židlicky´s work, concentrating on his very own perception of the female face and body. From the beginning of his career Židlický has concentrated on the body as the central motif of his work, but in recent years the women, the bodies and its parts are gaining more of an erotic tone. Each image is playing with one´s imagination and emotion in order to emphasize its transience.
The image as such is in Židlicky´s work more a starting point leading to a much more visually elaborated artwork. He uses the knowledge of painting, drawing and old techniques in photography upon which he builds his series: silver bromide prints, ferrotypes, ambrotypes, colored positives, combined techniques. The artist´s knowledge of these techniques allows him to intensify the aesthetic of his work as a whole, as well as in the delicate work with light and toning. The artist manipulates and disrupts the original negative, uses different interventions, yet remains faithful to the interpenetration of structures. His images are playful yet at the same time emotional and melancholic, each image a sophisticated choreography of body and nature.
