This tender observer works against time, preserving what will soon vanish. Some images suggest scenes of ‘imprinted time’ from a Tarkovsky film and the passage into a semi-mythical time and space – even something like “The Zone” from Tarkovsky’s Stalker. The second revelation is silence. We can almost see an abrupt and brutal quiet descending after decades of industrial background noise. The absent sounds are paradoxically imprinted on the images and their absence also symbolises the silenced dreams of progress. We see rather than hear the fade-out grooves of the records of history and the hanging sheets of cloud that often shroud the area suggest a new sound – the tender dripping of rain on derelict machinery and worn-out dreams…
