Gabor Kerekes (1945-2014) is one of the most important Hungarian and European photographers who was involved with art photography for over 30 years. Initially interested in technical aspects of photography, he gradually turned to a metaphorical representation of relation between ‘art and science’. His technical processes ranged from camera obscura and historical photographic techniques to large-scale professional methods.
With the exhibitions at Collegium Hungaricum and Photon Gallery we are paying a homage to these photo-artists whose body of work has to be rediscovered, reevaluated and presented to broader European audience. Incorporating both “magical” and rational approach to photography, Kerekes’ work remains inspirational to younger generations of artists as well as to number of art historians and experts in the field of visual arts. These aspects will be elaborated in frames of extensive accompanying programme during the exhibitions in both venues.
The exhibitions are organised by Photon Gallery, in collaboration with Collegium Hungaricum, Art Photo Budapest in Inštitutom Nessim.
