BLAŽ ZUPANČIČ: TRANS-STRIP
23 April – 23 May 2014
Exhibition extended until 23 May!
Opening: Wednesday, 23 April 2014, 7pm
The retrospective exhibition of Blaž Zupančič’s Trans-strip is a selection from various photographic series the artist produced during different periods of his 35 year long career as a photographer. It presents two seemingly quite different directions in his creative interest – the exploration of the representation of a naked female body and experimenting with possibility of capturing time on photography.
The female nude, both classical as well as studio, holds a special place in Zupančič’s photographic work; placing a naked body in different settings and experimenting with the body in movement. In his Passpartout series (1997), a female nude steps out of a photograph and through a picture frame, reaching towards the viewer. In a more intimate series entitled Bathroom (2005), more or less explicit images of a human body in movement take their turn with interior details. Moonwalk (1995) is dedicated to the female nude photographed on a beach at night and hence it is illuminated by different light sources which intensifies the contrast, and makes the photographs look almost like a negative. The artist’s final series Movements (2013) transports the movements of a naked female body (once again) into a minimalist setting of a photographic studio.
Movement or moving are the key elements in the production of the In passing series (2009). It depicts various Slovenian regions photographed through the window of a moving train. The results are vibrant colourful images of barely recognisable structures that for a moment remind one of Mark Rothko’s abstract paintings – but which can also be interpreted as a metaphor for contemporary perceptions of the environment, which due to the rapid pace of everyday life, are ever transient.
Blaž Zupančič (1957) graduated from the Faculty of Law, Ljubljana in 1981. Involved in photography since 1974, he has been a freelance photographer in all fields of creative photography since 1988.
