Gábor Kerekes: PHOTOMAGIC
January 28 – February 26, 2010.
Gábor Kerekes (r. 1945) is one of the most important Hungarian photographers, involved in creative photography over 30 years. Initially he was interested in technical aspects of photography, later active as a press photographer; he gradually turned to a metaphorical representation of the relation between ‘Art and Science’. His technical processes range from the camera obscura through historical photographic techniques to large-scale professional methods. He won prestigius Béla Balázs Award. More about Kerekes on:
In the series Over Roswell 1 – 2 Kerekes uses a variety of technologies, from classic photo procedures to satellite image programs. He explores designated area with the help of the computer program called “U.S.A. Photomap” (in this case he’s found satellite shots of Roswell in New Mexico) processed through “screen-shot” method to get fascinating images.
Selfcloning series emerged some years later as a result of Kerekes’ interest in laboratory tests with his own tissues. Growing or decomposition of tissues were shot with the macro camera and later developed through various analogue procedures.
The welcome address at the exhibition inauguration on January 27 on 7pm will be held by Dr. Istvan Szent-Ivanyi, Ambassador of the Republic of Hungary, and Mr. Mihaly Surany, Director of Nessim Gallery.
