GABRIELLA CSOSZÓ: WALK-ON
A renowned Hungarian contemporary photographer Gabriella Csoszó will present three photo series under the common title Walk – On. The viewer is invited to take a “walk” through the artist’s subjective reflections displayed as multiple interpretations of her dialogues with imaginary interlocutors in various social and personal situations. In such a concept, the form of spatial composition or installation plays an important role placing Gabriella’s photographs in a subtle narrative of the exhibition.
Part, initially a hobby ending up as a serious photo diary, is a tempting journey and at the same time an inner monologue with an unnamed partner. Similar to some other series, it originated from ordinary activities, a need for communication and everyday identification, an inquisitive spirit or the desire for being close. At the time of the series’ production, she made long walks every single day; it was a spontaneous, irregularly recurring activity. Her daily walks were part of a game where she and a close friend of hers would navigate each other from a distance and share their experience. As a work of art, it reflects a process – it consists of the preliminary dialogue, the walk, its documentation and finally the exhibition. Thus the series is not merely focused on images or installation but to a large extent also on the text.
Similar principle is followed during the production of the series Cherry Trees, where the artist engaged in discovering the “cherry track”. In 1990, a Japanese Foundation donated 10.000 cherry trees to Berlin and they were planted along a section of the former wall (total length of 160 km). The photo installation follows the path of cherry trees at the location of the demolished Berlin Wall and focuses on the uncertainty of social, political and historical memory of our time. Right from the beginning, this was a joint project with an artist whose name remained unknown. This person helped Gabriella discover the cherry trees by descriptions, preliminary studies and draft-photos. Based on this material, she created her own version of the topic, thus the two walks ended up as a long series of images accompanied by description.
Revisiting Memory deals with the phenomenon of reminiscence focused on a dual perception – a German writer Christiane Neudecker and the artist visit places they have memories of. To the writer, this is the island called Amrum in the North Sea whilst the photographer’s the memory is related to a small place called Marcali in the northwestern part of Hungary. The series is therefore set as a literary and photographic dialogue on each others impressions of these places.
