Philemon's dream – the idea of eternal marriage
Gábor Máté researched, interpreted and portrayed the nature of a successful marriage. He explored why some couples stay together, why they remain attached to each other for the rest of their lives, and the benefits of this attachment for the individual and for society. The author delved into the difficulties that are inherent in lasting relationships. He revealed both the beauty and the agony of living together. That in our time, individualism is in stark contrast to the humility that should be a prerequisite for any well-functioning human relationship.
His photographs show people in real and permanent marriages and their surroundings. The author looked for symbolic motifs that play an important role in their staying together. He staged the scenes in all their aspects, which allowed him to portray the ambivalence of marriage in a very nuanced way.
