In December, Photon Gallery will open a solo exhibition of recent works by photographer Tomo Brejc, after his hiatus from producing and exhibiting artistic photographs. One of Slovenia’s most internationally successful photographers, Brejc has developed his own distinctive style over the years, encompassing his extensive knowledge of both the photographic medium and art history. A graduate in philosophy and cultural sociology, Tomo Brejc often uses principles from philosophy and cultural theory in his work. His photographs are therefore conceptually profound and well thought out, while at the same time intuitively created and supported by a high level of technical execution. The selected works in the exhibition represent the latest phase of Brejc’s artistic oeuvre, which is characterised by sublimated scenes of the man-made environment and human civilisation. These are accompanied by metaphysical landscape images, theoretically based on an exploration of the value of what is depicted. The exhibition represents a new direction in the artist’s ongoing formal exploration of the photographic medium and its expressive and confessional potential. It is a departure from Brejc’s earlier use of staged photography to an exploration of the landscape genre in photography, focusing on humanistic rather than topographical aspects.
