You are kindly invited to attend a book launch and conversation with Goran Bertok and Matej Sitar who recently published a double monograph, entitled Requiem, that includes two of Bertok’s most distinctive series of photographs – Visitors and Post Mortem. The book was released for The Angry Bat publishing house.
Requiem displays two of the most distinctive works of artist and photographer Goran Bertok whose artistic practice has been in the past 25 years consistently dedicated to documenting and depicting the human body in all its fragility, vulnerability and ephemerality.
In the early period, Bertok predominantly focused on producing staged mythological motifs as well as explicit pictures of wounded bodies and unconventional sexual practices. Later, he made a radical step forward in his ongoing exploration of the human body that would eventually lead him to the ultimate end – physical death. Bertok is tone of the few photographers who applies the principles of postmortem photography to his work. As well as direct visual confrontation with decaying bodies, Bertok is also interested in the broader social and cultural aspects of the phenomena of death.
Until 31 October 2015 the Body and Flesh exhibition is on display at Photon Gallery in Vienna.
Goran Bertok (1963) graduated in Journalism from the Faculty of Sociology, Political Sciences and Journalism in Ljubljana. Since 1989, Bertok has been working as an independent artist and photographer in Ljubljana.
