Goran Bertok: Body and Flesh

3 September – 31 October 2015

Photon Gallery / Ankerbrot Fabrik, Vienna

A solo exhibition Body and Flesh of Slovenian artist and photographer Goran Bertok will display an extensive overview of his body of work from the past 25 years. During this period his ongoing practice has been dedicated to documenting and depicting human body in all its fragility, vulnerability and ephemerality.

In the early period Bertok has been predominantly focused on producing staged mythological motifs, explicit pictures of wounded bodies and unconventional sexual practices, and thereupon he made a radical step forward in his ongoing exploration of human body which eventually brought him to the ultimate end – physical death. However, he is interested in the broader social and cultural aspects of the phenomena of death as well as in the direct visual confrontation with decaying bodies. Bertok is therefore one of the few photographers who applies the principles of post mortem photography to his work. The exhibition Body and Flesh at Photon Gallery will showcase the most significant milestones of his artistic development between 1990 and 2014.

Goran Bertok (1963) graduated in Journalism from the Faculty of Sociology, Political Sciences and Journalism in Ljubljana. Since 1989 he has been working as an independent artist and photographer in Ljubljana.
