• Goran Bertok (1963) graduated in journalism from the Faculty of Sociology, Political Sciences and Journalism in Ljubljana. In his early career, he focused on the creation of staged scenes with motifs of unconventional sexual practices, especially from the field of sadomasochism (series Omen, Stigmata, etc.) and later turned to a more radical exploration of physicality. This soon led him to the ultimate theme – the physical death. He devoted much of his work to this topic, both through direct visual confrontation with decaying bodies (Post Mortem, Visitors), as well as through the portraiture of those who experienced immediate proximity to death (Survivors). In his artistic career spanning over almost three decades, his work has been included in many important solo and group exhibitions both at home and abroad. Most recently in the group exhibition Et nos morts? Post-mortem photography in Europe today at the Maison de la Photographie Robert Doisneau, Gentilly, France (2023) and REALIZE! RESIST! REACT! Performance and Politics in the 1990s in the Post-Yugoslav Context at the Museum of Contemporary Art Metelkova (2021).   • Photographer Vladimír Birgus (b. 1954) has long been important on the Czech and European photography scene, where he played several roles, ranging from photographer and columnist to historian and teacher. A number of high-profile projects are connected with his name, in particular the comprehensive exhibitions and books Czech Photographic Avant-garde, 1918–1948 and Czech Photography of the 20th Century, which have, in a fundamental way, helped promote the works of many Czech photographers internationally. He has also helped to gain appreciation for the works of František Drtikol, Jaroslav Rössler, and Eugen Wiškovský. As a photographer, he has gained an international reputation, and has shown his works in dozens of exhibitions at home and abroad, and his photographs are in a number of important collections. Since the late 1970s, he has systematically expanded his series of photographs called Something Unspeakable, in which he organically links elements of socially concerned documentary photography with a subjective view. His photographs are enriched with many visual metaphors and symbols, whose psychological and emotional meanings are underscored by the symbolic use of color photography. His photographs include existential and dramatic scenes from the streets of big European cities against the background of everyday life and slowly moving history.

  • Borut Peterlin (1974) graduated from Prague’s FAMU Academy (1994–1998) and concluded a postgraduate study at the London College of Printing (2002–2003). In 2000, he received a scholarship of the Benetton Group’s Research Center for Communication, Fabrica where he worked alongside the renowned photographer Oliviero Tosacani. Shortly after, in 2001, Peterlin co-founded Fotopub Festival of Documentary Photography in Novo Mesto, where he continued to work as an artistic director until 2008. He likewise worked as a photojournalist for over ten years at the weekly magazine Mladina. He currently lives and works in Novo mesto. In recent years, Peterlin’s has dedicated his practice to the pioneering photography processes of the 19th Century, which eventually led him to study with Mark Osterman at the George Eastman House in Rochester, USA. As an active vlogger, he conducts workshops on vintage photography techniques and teaches and conducts workshops around Europe.   • Branko Lenart (1948) was born in former Yugoslavia and later migrated to neighbouring Austria with his family at 6 years of age. In 1968 he became a member of the avant-garde art society Forum Stadtpark, that later grew into Camera Austria. He thought photography at the College of Art and Design and the Technical College Joanneum in Graz. Lenart is an internationally renowned photographer, who has widely travelled across the world ever since his youth. He attended various artist residencies like Apeiron Workshops in Millerton, New York, La Rochelle in Arles, France, and others in Oxford, Rome, Paris and London. His oeuvre sits between documentary and conceptual art photography. He dedicated his attention to the margins of society, be it the members of urban counter-cultures at the time or to the social conditions in the country and the peripheries. He has been exhibiting regularly since the 1970s. He has exhibited internationally in more than 50 solo and more than 150 group exhibitions, his works are in 35 collections of major national institutions in Slovenia, Austria and abroad, and he has published 22 monographs during his career.   • Branko Cvetkovič (1951) is mostly recognized as an architectural photographer in Slovenia, professionally mainly in the field of industrial architecture. His photographs are characterized by rigorous objectivity of the depicted, based on the postulates of The Düsseldorf School of Photography. His architectural photographs are predominantly minimalistic in their structure and shot with a large-format camera. Cvetkovič is known for a conceptual approach to photography. He is particularly interested in unveiling the symbolic meaning behind the buildings concerning their urban history, whilst the selection of motifs reflects his preoccupation with issues of urban architecture. In recent years, his main focus has been the phenomenon of light and space from a more formalistically abstract and conceptually universal starting point. His last major solo exhibition, entitled NO-SPACE | ZERO-SPACE, was held in 2018 in the former monastery church of the Božidar Jakac Gallery in Kostanjevica.   • Janez Korošin (1935) began doing photography at the age of seventeen in the Photo Club Ravne na Koroškem. He joined the Jože Stefan Institute in Ljubljana in the spectroscopy laboratory, where he met Marjan Smerke, who introduced him to exhibiting photography. He became a member of the Photo Club Ljubljana in 1966 and later, when they merged in 1968, a member of Photo Group ŠOLT – Ljubljana. He received numerous international awards and prizes for his photographic work. In 1977, the Photographic Association of Yugoslavia awarded him the title of Master of Photography, and in 1996, the Association of Slovene Photographers presented him with the Janez Puhar Award for his lifetime achievement in photography. In his extensive oeuvre, he devoted himself to a variety of motifs, mainly landscape and genre shots. He recorded numerous scenes of everyday urban life and created portraits of individuals in urban landscapes and at various social events. Korošin's work expresses a subtle approach to composition and the creation of atmosphere. He has always developed his photographs himself and has an excellent sense of tonality and a masterful use of grainy black-and-white film.   • Roberto Kusterle (1948, Gorizia) has been active in the field of visual art since the 1970s, initially taking up painting and installation work. In the late 1980s, he became interested in photography, which soon became the main medium for his artistic expression. In his work, he focuses on the themes of continuality and connectivity between the human, animal and the natural world. His artistic style encompasses elements of the unusual, bizarre and the surreal. His photographs are not documentary in nature, but are figments of his imagination; the objects, people and the worlds depicted do not exist in reality and typically serve as the basis for his photography. He has been actively exhibiting throughout Italy, Slovenia and internationally since 1988. During this time he has participated in more than 90 solo exhibitions and more than 140 group exhibitions.   • Rajko Bizjak (1963) is a photographer who studied film at the Academy of Dramatic Art in Zagreb (1990). He is the author of numerous photography series and worked on over ten short and documentary films as the director or cameraman. Teaching photography since 1995, he has had vast experience in this field of teaching at an array of schools, courses, seminars, symposiums in Slovenija and abroad. Since 2006, he has been a high-school and since 2009, a higher education professor for photography and film. His body of work is characterised by erotic photography of the female body, which he presents in unusual and provocative aspects in projects such as The Game (1986), Hommage a Eikoh Hosoe (1991), Kanaan (1996) and Flowers (2001). He presented his solo project Short Stories (2011) at the Photon Gallery. His works are held in the collections of the Cabinet for Slovenian Photography Kranj and have also been presented at the Bonhams auction house.   • Tanja Verlak (1979) received her PhD from the Royal College of Art in London. Through ontological and phenomenological models of the photographic image, she examined the relationship between the indexical image and its iconic or imaginary aspects. She conducted part of her research at the renowned British interdisciplinary research institution The British School at Rome. In 2021, she received a prestigious Fulbright grant and was invited by MoCP – The Museum of Contemporary Photography and Columbia University in Chicago to work as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow. She is a recipient of a Zois scholarship and other awards and fellowships, including the Royal College of Art Research Bursary and the TATA Grant. She has twice been honoured with the Slovenian Photography of the Year Award. She has exhibited at home and abroad (AIPAD, New York, Paris Photo, Texas Contemporary Art Fair Houston, Tate Modern (Offprint), GoEun Museum of Photography, Moderna galerija Ljubljana, Maribor Art Gallery).   • Vojko Flegar (1958) is a law graduate, retired journalist, contributor to Radio Študent and Tribuna, correspondent, commentator and editor of Delo and Dnevnik, and freelance journalist. He was also an occasional photographer who followed early Slovenian punk, rock and alternative music with his camera in the late 1970s and early 1980s, when these marginal creative practises were not yet of interest to most "serious" photographers. His mainly reportage-like ouevre condensed in a relatively short period of three years is focused on the interaction between the performers on stage and the audiences' interventions in public space, especially in the form of graffiti. Some of his photographs, after being published in magazines and on record sleeves from this period, later became part of the visual legacy of this perhaps most subculturally exciting time in Slovenia.   • Antonio Živkovič (1962) graduated from the Faculty of Electrical Engineering in Ljubljana. Živkovič grew up in the industrial town of Trbovlje, the centre of the mining industry in Slovenia, which significantly influenced his artistic endeavours. In his work he focuses on capturing places, stories and motifs related to industrial towns. His oeuvre is characterised by poetic documentation of abandoned industrial landscapes. He has been working and exhibiting as a photographer since 1989. His body of work encompasses 16 series, which were exhibited at 28 solo shows and included in over 40 group exhibitions, both in Slovenia and abroad. He has exhibited at the Photonic Moments festival with the solo exhibition Traces of the Past (2010) and at the Photon Gallery in Ljubljana with the solo exhibitions Water Towers (2004), Industrial Interiors (2005) and Reconstructions (2007). In 2009, his monograph Black Valley was published, and in the same year the City Art Gallery in Ljubljana presented his retrospective exhibition Photographs 19982008. At the Idrija Municipal Museum he presented his exhibition Doors / Last Shift (2017).   • Bojan Salaj (1964) has been active as an art photographer since the 1990s, producing various original projects. He was employed as a photographer at the National Gallery in Ljubljana between 1994 and 2018, and is therefore the author of many photographs of Slovenian cultural heritage in the field of visual art. He lives and works in Ljubljana. His artistic focus is centred on questioning the representation of photography in mass media, on the iconography of power structures, as well as on the models related to construction of historical and national cultural identity. His approach is highly conceptual and follows objectivist principles. As part of the Photonic Moments festival, he presented his solo exhibition InteriorsCorrespondences at the National Gallery of Slovenia (2014) and later at the Makina Gallery in Pula (2016) under the title Correspondences.   • Dino Kužnik (1986) is a New York based photographer and graphic designer. He uses photography as a medium to capture aesthetically unique scenes, with an emphasis on colour and composition. After several years of experience as a journalistic photographer, retoucher and graphic designer, he now mainly focuses on personal and commercial photography projects ranging from documentary, automotive, architecture and landscape to environmental portraiture and fashion. His notable clients include Tyler the Creator, Jay Versace, Tesla, Adobe, The New Yorker, Wonderland Sun, etc. In 2019, he published his first hard cover book titled Shaped by the West with the publisher Aint–Bad. His work has been featured in numerous online and print publications. He has exhibited in London, Ljubljana, New York, Toronto, Trieste, Arles, Detroit and Paris.   • Eva Petrič (1983) is a conceptual, intermedia artist who works with various disciplines of fine art, as well as with photography, performance and writing. She graduated from psychology and fine art at the Webster University in Vienna (2005) and later pursued a master’s degree in new media at Transart Institute in Berlin/Danube University Krems (2010). She participated in over 60 solo and 110 group exhibitions across Europe, USA and Asia. She lives and works in Ljubljana, Vienna and in New York. She was the first Slovenian artist to exhibit two large-scale installations at the famous St. Stephan Cathedral in Vienna in 2016. In the same year, she also participated in one of the biggest annual open-air art projects in New York, Sing of Hope. Her artistic expression includes photography, video, sound, performance, design, poetry and writing. In the forefront of her work is the concept of spatial atmosphere, both on the physical, mental, imaginary and metaphorical level. Since 2017, she has been represented in the USA by Mourlot Gallery in New York.   • Jošt Dolinšek (1997) is a visual artist primarily interested in art photography. In 2020, he earned a BA in psychology at the University of Ljubljana. He is currently based in Gothenburg, Sweden, where he studies photography at the Academy HDK-Valand. Dolinšek mainly works on long-term projects, exploring the visual experience of the environment and his relation to it. He is interested in various approaches to photographic art, combining it with other media, such as sound and installation. In 2018, he exhibited and published his series In Between under the If Slovenia Were project. Dolinšek was one of the selected artists in the 3rd cycle of PARALLEL Photo Platform. Among others, he has exhibited his works in Robert Capa Center in Budapest, at Photon Gallery in Ljubljana and Vienna, at Voies-off Festival in Arles, Charta Festival in Rome and Landskrona Foto Festival.   • Peter Koštrun (1979) graduated from Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Ljubljana, where he currently teaches at the Department of Photography. He has been exhibiting at home and abroad since 2003. Koštrun is a master of landscape photography known for his depiction of empty and deserted landscapes, as well as his refined selection of framing and light. He is less interested in the documentary dimension of the land due to his conceptual approach to the genre. His works contain a subtle atmosphere that evokes a feeling of something greater or even immortal. Recent solo exhibitions include Moments, Mottard & Jenray, Liège (2012) in Belgium; The Time is Now, Photo Gallery Lang, Samobor in Croatia (2012), Singularity, Photon Gallery in Vienna, Austria (2014) and Premonition, Center for Contemporary Arts Celje, Slovenia (2016) and Photon Gallery Vienna (2019).   • Roman Bezjak (1962) studied photography in Dortmund. From 1989 to 1999 he worked on photo essays worldwide for the magazine of the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung and other German print media. In 1996, he won the German Photography Award. In 2000, he was appointed professor of photography at the Bielefeld University of Applied Sciences, where he has been a dean since 2014. Between 2005 and 2011, he produced the work Archaeology of an Era, Images on Socialist Postwar Modernism. From 2011, Roman Bezjak presented his work in numerous solo exhibitions, including at the Sprengel Museum, Hannover and at the GoEun Museum of Photography, Busan, South Korea. He participated in exhibitions at the Pinakothek der Moderne, Munich, the Architekturzentrum Wien, and the Deichtorhallen Hamburg.   • Stane Jagodič (1943) has been active in various fields, media and contexts of visual art since the mid-sixties. After graduating from the Academy of Fine Arts in Ljubljana in 1970, he soon became one of the most active and prominent artists in Yugoslavia, due to his distinguishable artistic expression. In his continuously developing body of work, he has adopted several different concepts of artistic production using various artistic media such as photography, painting, graphics, cartoons, performance, assemblages and object art (installations). Since 1967, Stane Jagodič has been exploring artistic photography and some of its creative derivates like photomontage and photo collage, which are the most significant in his artistic production. Stane Jagodič was a co-founder and conceptual leader of Grupa Junij, active between 1970 and 1985. The group worked as a broad artistic platform that included a number of prominent local and international artists. As an independent artist, Stane Jagodič participated in more than 50 solo and more than 200 group exhibitions worldwide. He lives and works in Ljubljana.   • Tomo Brejc (1975) studied at the Faculty of Arts in Ljubljana, where he graduated with his thesis The End of Photography – or Just a Chance to Rethink European Visual Culture. In recent years, he has been active in the fields of artistic production, fashion photography and theoretical writing. Between 1999 and 2003, he was a member of the editorial board of the magazine Fotografija, where he also published several professional articles on the theory of photography and in the field of photographic production. He collaborates with many national and international publications and agencies. He is one of Slovenia’s most internationally successful photographers. Brejc has developed his own distinctive style over the years, encompassing his extensive knowledge of both the photographic medium and art history. A graduate in philosophy and cultural sociology, Tomo Brejc often uses principles from philosophy and cultural theory in his work. His photographs are therefore conceptually profound and well thought out, while at the same time intuitively created and supported by a high level of technical execution.   • Uroš Acman (1982) graduated in photography at FAMU, Prague in 2003. He later continued his studies on a post-graduate level at École cantonale d’art de Lausanne (Écal) in Switzerland, where he graduated in 2008. He currently teaches photography at the Secondary School for Design and Photography (SŠOF) in Ljubljana. His works have been shown in several group exhibitions in Slovenia, Italy, Austria, Slovakia and the Czech Republic. His solo exhibitions include the series Museums in the Simulaker Gallery (2008) and the Škuc Gallery in Ljubljana (2009) which documents the so-called hunting rooms and spaces. More recently, his series Night was shown in the group exhibition Without Borders? Boundless Invisible Walls, which travelled from Fotogalerie Rathaus Graz to Galerie Photon in Ljubljana and Bad Radkersburg on the Austrian-Slovenian border. This work is part of a photographic folder or portfolio box with twenty prints by renowned Slovenian photographic artists from the 1970s to the present day, published on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of Photon Gallery. - The edition is 100 copies, the 40 x 50 cm photographs are printed on archival paper, the prints are signed and accompanied by certificates.
  • The debut by Zuzana Pustaiová titled One Day Every Day (2022) is an ironic commentary on various social norms impacting our daily lives. Commonplace routine, gender stereotypes, and role-playing (depicted in the book literally as ‚wearing masks‘) are few examples of cultural code, which, on the one hand, bind the society together, but on the other, it imposes the often unwanted social pressure affecting an individual’s freedom. In this book, the artist seeks the boundary where the (otherwise useful) behavioral patterns become pathological. Exploring the intricate relationship between these patterns and broader social phenomena, the book shows deeper layers of institutional limitations conceived by the policy-makers and relayed to the public by the media and via social networks. It brings the reader’s attention to the point that while striving for a better world, one ought not to forget how the individual feels in the realm of all those recommendations, behests and restrictions, imprinted to one’s mind since an early age and while being brought up, only to find that civilizing imperatives often lead to systematic oppression. The idea of rethinking one’s conviction, when it comes to social norms, is further supported by the ‚Leporello‘ layout, allowing for alternative page juxtapositions.   • The Back to Black project is set up as an international project in which Photon joins the global trend of reviving interest in black-and-white, analog and the so-called hybrid photography, and especially in contemporary, creative use of old photographic techniques. In modern times, these are often associated with the use of contemporary technologies, which expand the creative field of application and bring original solutions even in today’s mostly digital time. This research is in terms of content focused on representing different approaches of contemporary artists to the medium which was not long ago predicted to go extinct. There has been an incredible turnaround in recent years as the popularity of analog and black-and-white photography has begun to revive. Analog photography, that was thought as obsolete, is experiencing a renaissance, especially among young people. Wide and renewed interest in analog photography can be seen especially on social media, where large communities with millions of followers have sprung up in the last few years. Also in the field of artistic photography, where the practice of hybrid photography has already prevailed in the last two decades, this trend is well adopted, especially among young photographic artists. Today, they use all the technologies and tools available, and the works are a combination of the latest technologies and the oldest photographic techniques.   • Robert Kusterle's exhibition catalogue is actually a photographic folder published on the occasion of the Images on Paper / Cartacei, exhibition opening at the Gong Gallery in Nova Gorica. The conceptual design of the publication is a collaboration between the artist, Gong Gallery and Studio Faganel from Gorizia, where the catalogue was also designed. The photographic folder includes, in addition to the expert text, fourteen individual reproductions of photographs based on images of old papers from the Gorizia archive, with damaged and faded stamps layered on top of each other. The last layer is made up of human figures that merge and are immersed in the paper, so that the viewer can no longer distinguish between the surface of the body and the paper. In the context of the artist's concept of photographs, the cover of the folder is partly made of pieces of old paper, while the title of the exhibition and the gallery's logo are stamped onto it.   • „In today’s world, sweating is taboo. Enter “sweat” into any search engine and you’ll find a multitude of ways to remedy it. The huge array of deodorants available commercially is an indication of just how unacceptable sweating is in everyday life. Sweat is embarrassing: a sign of poor hygiene. Body odor is ‘disgusting’. Faces cringe when confronted with it. Even as far back as the Bible, sweat was equated with hardship. When Adam was expelled by God, for example, he was condemned thenceforth to earn his daily bread By the Sweat of His Brow (Genesis 3, 19). Sweat may well owe a good part of its poor reputation to its anti-social stench, but it also has negative connotations due to its association with fear. A sweaty handshake betrays nervousness. When you wake up bathed in sweat at night, it’s more likely due to nightmares or anxiety than to faulty air conditioning. Photographer Reiner Riedler has discovered sweat as an artistic form of expression.Fascinated by the image captured by the sweat on his T-shirt after jogging – like a spontaneous self-portrait – he has used the sweat produced by others to create a series of images. In order to achieve this, he approached the renowned Fraunhofer Institute in Munich which provided him with a special sensory material that could be placed above or underneath his perspiring models. In doing so, Riedler used the sweaty body as a kind of rubber stamp to create life-size negatives. He then photographed these and transformed them into monochrome paper prints.“

  • Eva Petrič’s Webbing is a »hybrid« of her visual art and creative writing with which she presents the web of her 25 art installations in the medium of lace assembage. Made in the period of 2012-2018, they were installed worldwide. Connected into one web by the artist’s perception of lace representing hematomas they seem to exist as a collective web which surpasses time and space. Hematomas occur not only when the wall of blood  vessels is damaged and blood leaks into surrounding tisues where it does not belong, but also on emotional and social dimensions. We, as a society or as indiviudals, can ourselves be hematomas when emotional barriers break and emotions explode… Petrič’s hematomas, are further tied into one common web by their ephemerality: when the artist deinstalls them, they cease to exist and can never again appear in the same form – except in this monography.   • In this book Anikó Robitz presents her photographs made between 2007 and 2020. Her works are based on modern and contemporary architecture. When taking pictures she uses only geometrical forms and elements to create her unique and minimalistic photos. While using the chosen details the composition can get far from the original and shows us something completely new. None of the photos were made in the studio but in the real world which surrounds us, in cities where titles refer to. Although Anikó Robitz is a photographer, her pictures are more appropriately approached as works of fine art. They are best understood by those who are familiar with 20th century visual art forms, primarily abstraction, Suprematism, and Minimalism – can be read in four languages in the foreword of the book.   • Little known outside of his native Hungary, the body of work Szász created from the late 1950s through the 1970s, epitomizes the artistic vision and innovation of photographers active in Hungary during the years of communism. Featuring boldly graphic abstractions primarily drawn from Hungarian life and landscape, Szász’s images communicate through a universal vernacular. Working in the tradition of Hungarian greats such as André Kertész and László Moholy-Nagy, János Szász’s images are notable for their experimentation with radical perspectives, formalist compositions, and stark, black and white contrast printing. Szász’s photographs transform ordinary scenes from his hometown of Pécs — snow-covered vineyards, stacked firewood, and rows of seating in a darkened movie theater—into bold and graphic compositions. By manipulating darkroom exposure and processing techniques, Szász often reduced his subjects to pattern. He utilized a darkroom process for high-contrast printing, which involved chemical over-processing, then painstakingly bleaching over toned areas with a paintbrush or sponge, to arrive at his dynamically graphic images.

  • Which are the factors that have created one of the of the leading man of the Sicilian Mafia?  How did Jakub Stanek come across this dangerous man in sunny Sicily and how did the idea of encapsulating this unusual encounter in the form of a photo publication come about? This unique experience in which Stanek built a friendly relationship with Giuseppe, made it possible to showcase and build on the image of a criminal, together with the everyday image of a hospitable, friendly, intelligent man who loves his small homeland. The photos are impressions of places, stories heard and people pointed out by »Peppe«. The Sicilian mafia today, Cosa Nostra, is a cleverly camouflaged machine blending into people's daily lives, weakening the state and controlling businesses.
