The story is simple. We follow the protagonist, natural light, in three chapters, as it slowly unveils and deglamourizes. In the first chapter, protruding slants of light are unravelling miniscule details and creating mystical, dream-like images. We could be anywhere. Then, Lumen takes us into the tangible, but is entirely subordinate to geometry. Only in the third chapter is the exhausted body of a former maternity hospital illuminated, the walls stripped off to recognition. It is unforgiving, unmasking the misery, but bringing hope, light and warmth at the same time. I believe that embracing one's sorrow is the only way to heal. We have the power to acknowledge the good and the bad and begin to also accept the darkest traits of our individuality; one needs to grieve. Sorrow is not only related to darkness but light as well. I wish people could feel so strong and alive.” The photograph is printed on archival semi-gloss 290g paper. Nicole Brandstaetter (2001) is a Vienna-based artist whose work spans the fields of photography, storytelling, fashion and design. Since 2019, her photographic practice has been driven by a relentless pursuit of aesthetics, capturing the intricate interplay between visual appeal and narrative depth. Her ability to integrate design and fashion into her photography has created a powerful visual language that captures the essence of contemporary artistic expression. In the photograph, rain pours down on the lens of my camera, creating this beautiful and abstract image of a silhouette in a white dress in the city of Milan. In contrast to regular documenting, I'm focused on somewhat unspecific motifs. These mainly include the details that might otherwise be missed, and the individual in the crowd – be it a protester, a police officer or a casual passer-by. It is a series-in-progress since the protests still take place every Friday.” The photograph is printed on archival gloss 290g paper. This book is the first documentation of a young generation of Slovak photographers. After the events of the late 1980s and 90s a photography department was established at the University of Bratislava, where the trend of individualism was broadly supported and a new creativity arose after decades of oppression. To document the wide creative and experimental variety of the young artists, this comprehensive title employs four different approaches: by art critic Lucia GavulovNB, photography theorist Michaela PaštekovNB, philosopher and aesthetic Jozef Kovalčik, and photographer and teacher Filip Vančo. They all brought their different ideas and individual views to this fascinating scene. Author: Peter Ančic, Juraj Anušev, Juraj Fifik, Barbora Haviarova, Jana Ilkova...
