Solace of Memory / How we Survived Communism and Even Laughed

    Original price was: 20,00 €.Current price is: 14,00 €.

Around thirty years ago, major social changes took place in the countries of Central and Eastern Europe (CEE). During that time, some countries of the former socialist bloc also declared their independence. Slovenia was among them. On the occasion of celebrating thirty years of independence, we in Photon asked ourselves how photography recorded the time before these turning points – in the lives of ordinary people. With this exhibition project, we are not interested in fateful historical events and great personalities, but we want to offer an insight into everyday life and present some contradictions of the social system that built on a utopian vision of the future. To revisit the “family albums” of the former socialist countries, we are presenting some important photographers from the CEE region, who documented life in Eastern Europe in the 1970s and 1980s. All of them, even with different formal and aesthetic starting points, share a subjective and often humorous view of banal and absurd everyday life.

In recent years Roman Bezjak has been intensively studying the theme of Socialist Modernism. He took the last series of photographs in Tashkent, in a "city as a symbol of Soviet modernity and an open-air museum of socialist architecture". In this experimental laboratory of modern architecture, only the countless prefabricated buildings remain in their original condition today. The devastating earthquake of 1966 enabled the emergence of an open-air museum of socialist architecture in Tashkent. Urban planners were able to realize their vision of a new city as a symbol of Soviet modernity in Asia. In this experimental laboratory of modern architecture, only the countless prefabricated buildings remain in their original condition today. The architects and building artists virtuously combined constructional requirements with local traditions. Oriental mosaic ornaments decorate the windowless gable facades of the prefabricated buildings. The facade designs of the long sides take into account the hot climatic conditions of the region with their concrete ornaments that serve as sunshades. Iza Štrumbelj Oblak / Photonic Editions

    Original price was: 190,00 €.Current price is: 140,00 €.
Iza Štrumbelj Oblak (1997) is about to complete the study of photography at the higher school of applied sciences VIST. To acquire additional knowledge and broaden her horizons, she took several courses, and participated at several group exhibitions and photography competitions. Despite being her favorite medium of expression, she is not bound to photography. She is interested in the society and its many problems, intricating them with the motif of personal growth. In her earlier work, she tried to figure out beauty and explored the notion of personal identity. She has always been interested in human relations and the personal stories of the people behind the pictures. The photographs on display come from the backstage of her previous project in which she constructed her self-portrait through the materialization of relations, memories, interests and national identity. She wonders what happens if the portrait is stripped off itself, which makes her explore other constituents of personal identity. The photograph is printed on archival matt 290g paper. The entire edition is printed with a white border in the dimension 40 x 50 cm (including the white border). With each print, you will receive a certificate of authenticity. It creates tension between order and chaos which is also evident on the surfaces of things around us. If we step back and observe the world on a large-scale timeline, the activities of the humankind become tiny and irrelevant. These photographs were created in the spirit of ephemeral; a new house and an abandoned ruin put side-by-side.” The photograph is printed on archival semi-gloss 290g paper.
